The initiatives selected as #101ExamplesForTheClimate were announced last week. Plastigaur was among those chosen for its FIREPOST+ project currently under development, which is focused on a range of thinner plastic films for flexible packing and packaging made with up to 70% post-consumer plastic waste.
The CompaniesForTheClimate initiative is working to stop the ClimateEmergency and move towards #Decarbonisation, encouraging the private sector to drive the #ForTheClimate campaign. Plastigaur is already part of the network, and we encourage all companies to join.
FIREPOST+ Project
The Firepost+ project is still under development, and counts on the collaboration and support of IHOBE, the public company overseen by the Basque Government’s Department of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment.
Life cycle assessment (LCA) has been completed and shows that this project can reduce the carbon footprint by 23.95% for products with 70% recycled content compared to products which are entirely virgin (based on a cradle-to-grave life cycle). This applied eco-design action would imply a significant reduction in the carbon footprint not only for the company but also for the products it generates, and would therefore positively affect its consumers’ carbon footprint.
The reduced thickness means less primary product is consumed and transportation is also more efficient as the products are lighter, leading in turn to a reduction in the product’s environmental impact.
The waste generated at the end of the life cycle is also lower.
This technological innovation therefore looks to help meet the Sustainable Development Goals set out in the United Nations 2030 Agenda through more efficient, responsible use of natural resources, going beyond the scope of the company to cover the material’s whole value chain.
